Meet Vicki and MartinOn paper, Vicki and Martin look like a bit of an odd couple. Vicki grew up in suburban Melbourne where family dinners consisted of ‘meat and three veg’. Martin grew up in a traditional Vietnamese household where every family meal was couched in cultural significance. When the two first met on the dance floor at the Prince of Wales in St Kilda, Melbourne, they couldn’t possibly realise just how similar their interests and values were.
Now partners in business and life, Vicki and Martin Nguyen share much more than their surname. Vicki’s passion is yoga, Martin’s is Chinese medicine, and together they run a holistic healing centre, The Lotus Healing Centre, in Essendon that treats everyone from elite athletes with international careers, to the quiet couple down the street.
Food as medicine is their other passion. In melding Martin’s professional blending skills with Vicki’s business nouse, the duo has created an exquisite Sweet Balsamic Reduction under the Jomei’s Fine Foods brand. Vinegar has long been known to improve digestion, and the product was developed as a natural condiment for Martin’s clients to incorporate into their meal plans.
Meet Vicki: the brains behind the business.
Vicki spent the majority of her adolescent life battling stomach troubles only to find out that she had a myriad of food intolerances including an allergy to dairy & gluten. To combat this Vicki embarked on a gluten free, dairy free, organic diet. She believes & lives by this quote, by Hippocrates, “let food be your medicine.”
After completing a Business Management Degree, Vicki moved to Japan for a year. When she came back home to Australia she realised that her belief in wellbeing through food was her true calling. Vicki combined her passion and training to develop Jomei’s Fine Foods.
In 2002, two babies were born into the Nguyen household. First was the long awaited arrival of Vicki and Martin’s first baby boy, Jomei. Shortly after, Jomei’s Fine Foods was born and the first bottle of Sweet Balsamic Reduction was sold commercially. Now with over 250 stockists internationally, Vicki had no idea just how fast her food baby would grow.

Meet Martin: the condiment king and superb sauce mixologist
As the youngest of three siblings, Martin was the one standing on his tiptoes in the kitchen trying to find out what his mother was cooking.
Martin’s first career track was as an engineer, but aged 20 he quit this path and moved to his place of ancestry, Vietnam, to study the art of Chinese Medicine and Kung Fu. There, he learned nutrition and the importance of herbs in a healthy diet.
Now a trained Traditional Chinese Practitioner, Acupuncturist, Masseuse and Herbalist, Martin began experimenting with sauces in the kitchen whilst wife Vicki was busy looking after their newborn baby.
He believes that so many sauces take away the true flavour of a dish, rather than enhance it. He discovered that many people found traditional balsamic vinegar too strong and acidic, so developed this reduction to create a sauce that aimed to accentuate the flavour of a dish rather than overpower it.
